    "Where have the giants gone?" Workshop for Families and Children - part of the Earth Day Birthday event at Millbrook Marsh - (20 minute presentation and hands on component)

    Join Sara Fitzsimmons, Director of Restoraton for The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) to learn the  the story of the Mighty Giants who once towered over our Eastern forest. The American chestnut once accounted for a quarter of the Appalachian woods. They grew to 100 feet and provided habit and food to humans and wildlife. What caused them to disappear and how can we bring them back? Attendees will have the opportunity to plant their own American chestnut seed to take home, while supplies last.

    About this event: Burlington County's Annual Earth Fair returns each year to Historic Smithville Park featuring vendors, entertainment for all ages, and kids’ activities with an environmental twist. This family event focuses on ways to protect and enjoy our environment. Children's activities will include trash sculpting, paper making, storytelling, environmental vaudeville, face painting…and more. Be sure to check out the art exhibits in the Worker’s House & Gallery and the Smithville Mansion Annex Gallery. There will be “Green” vendors, artists, crafters, activity providers and performers that have an earth-friendly theme.

  • Festival of Wood - Grey Towers

    Help represent our Chapter at this two-day family event focused on environmental education at historic Grey Towers -- the summer retreat of Gifford Pinchot, two-time Governor and the first Chief of the US Forest Service.

    Volunteer for a couple hours to share your knowledge and interest in the American chestnut. Our display provides a helpful visual aid for sharing the whole story including its: life, death, and birth. We will also provide volunteers with educational handouts, membership information and pencils and stickers for the kids.?

The event is held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily the weekend after Labor Day each year at the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area in Jackson Township, Ocean County. 

    The Expo is free of charge and takes place rain or shine.
